Rookie Aims To Stay On A Winner

22 March 2007

APPRENTICE carpenter Daniel Carmody will be looking to build on his recent success when he drives Mainland Countess at Newcastle International Paceway this afternoon.

Carmody, who gained his licence to drive in races in January, has landed three winners so far and all have been aboard Mainland Countess, which is trained at Maitland by his father Paul.

Mainland Countess has been in fine form since resuming from a seven-month spell with a third at Newcastle on February 8 after being checked and galloping in running.

She was then placed at her next two outings before stringing together a hat-trick of victories at Newcastle over the past three Saturday nights.

At her most recent victory, on Saturday night, she enjoyed a nice trail one and two back in the running line before finishing strongly to score by three metres.

Lets Bring It On, drawn wide in barrier 10, has been racing consistently in stronger company in recent outings and looms as the main danger in race eight (2550 metres).

Catch As Catch Can, which finished fourth behind Mainland Countess on Saturday night after being forced to cover extra ground, is an each-way chance.

Talented filly Cameo Gem can return to the winners' list when she contests race five (2030m).

Cameo Gem won three of her five starts as a two-year-old last season before contracting a mystery virus which kept her away from the racetrack for eight months.

She led throughout to win at her first two runs back from that lay-off in February.

She then finished eighth at Newcastle on March 10 after showing blistering gate speed to lead through the first quarter in 27.4 seconds from barrier eight.

Promises Kept and the consistent Beejays Lad loom as threats.
